Hong Kong startup Viwoods recently hit the market with two new e-ink tablets: the 10.65-inch AiPaper and the 8.2-inch AiPaper mini. Both devices feature the latest Carta 1300 display, packing a crisp 300 PPI resolution into an incredibly slim 4.5-millimeter frame. If you enjoy writing or sketching by hand, the textured, paper-like screen feels completely natural. Plus, they run on Android, giving you full access to your favorite apps.
Viwoods also integrated built-in AI tools to help you draft text, summarize long articles, and pull up research papers on the fly. The concept clearly struck a chord. When the project launched on Kickstarter in August 2024, it pulled in over $75,000 from more than 150 backers within days.
This launch points to a growing movement in how we interact with technology. While Amazon’s Kindle popularized e-ink years ago, the display tech is now expanding into all kinds of everyday devices. The appeal is simple: e-ink uses a fraction of the battery life and gives your eyes a much-needed break. With up to 90% of screen users dealing with digital eye strain, swapping a glaring LCD for an e-ink display offers immediate relief.
Take the Minimal Phone, for example. It pairs an e-ink screen with a tactile keyboard to cut down on eye fatigue. It also intentionally strips away the bright, flashy visuals that keep us addicted to scrolling.
E-ink is popping up in unexpected places, too. Grocery stores are widely adopting digital e-ink price tags. Meanwhile, a Dutch company called Bagtag is modernizing air travel with e-ink luggage tags. You simply pair the tag with an app, check in online, and drop your bags at the airport self-service area without waiting in line.
