Fervo’s Smart Twist on an Old Idea

Using the Earth’s heat for energy is not a new idea. But it has always been tricky. In the past, companies could only drill straight down. This meant they needed to find the perfect spot where hot rocks were easy to reach. If the spot wasn’t just right, it wouldn’t work well. This limited where geothermal plants could be built.

Fervo Energy found a smarter way. They learned from companies that drill for oil and gas. These companies learned long ago how to drill down and then turn the drill to go sideways, or horizontally. Fervo is now using this directional drilling for geothermal energy.

Imagine you have a very large, very hot rock deep underground.

  • The old way: You drill one straight hole into it. You get some heat, but you only touch a small part of the rock.
  • Fervo’s way: You drill one hole down and then you steer the drill sideways. You can then drill multiple long horizontal tunnels through the hot rock, like the fingers of a hand.

This allows Fervo to reach much more hot rock from a single drilling location. It means they can get more steam and make more electricity from just one well. More importantly, this technology makes it possible to build geothermal power plants in many more places, not just in a few perfect spots. Each well Fervo drills costs about $4.8 million.

The Money and The Mission

Making this new technology work costs a lot of money. Fervo Energy has shown that its idea is promising. In early 2024, the company received $244 million in funding from investors. When investors give a company that much money, it is a strong sign that they believe the company’s technology is valuable and will be successful. This funding helps Fervo build more projects and improve its methods.

Once the power is made, Fervo plans to sell it for $100 per megawatt-hour. A megawatt-hour is a way of measuring a large amount of electricity. To put it simply, one megawatt-hour is about enough electricity to power 330 homes for one hour. The price of electricity changes all the time, but Fervo’s price aims to be competitive, especially for a power source that is available 24/7.

A Future Powered from the Ground

The United States government sees a lot of promise in geothermal energy. The Department of Energy (DOE), which is the part of the government focused on energy, has studied geothermal power a lot. They believe it has the potential to power more than 65 million American homes. That’s a huge number of houses that could run on clean, reliable energy from the Earth.

Right now, only eight states in the U.S. produce geothermal energy. But with new technologies like Fervo’s, that number could grow a lot.

The DOE also predicts two other important things:

  • Falling Costs: By the year 2030, the DOE expects the cost of geothermal energy to drop to about $60 per megawatt-hour. This would make it just as cheap as solar and wind power.
  • Massive Growth: By the year 2050, the government forecasts that America could produce twenty times more geothermal energy than it does today.
